Vitamins for Diabetes: Supplements to Bridge the Diet Gap

A healthy diet alongside adequate exercise and proper weight management are the key requirements of a holistic diabetic care program, vitamins for diabetes management are very important. But sometimes additional supplements are required to bridge the diet gap. Before taking a supplement, it is always advisable to consult your endocrinologist. Care should be taken that supplements should never be used to replace the actual medication

Some of the common supplements used to bridge the diet gap in diabetes management are:

Chromium

A metal and an essential trace mineral, chromium is found in many foods including meats vegetable, fruits, grain and yeast. The body can’t use glucose efficiently if there is less chromium in the body.

A doctor should always be consulted before taking chromium supplements as they are known to cause stomach pain and bloating in some cases

Magnesium

Magnesium is required for the body to process glucose. It is found in foods like pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, halibut, tuna, spinach and oat bran.

Care should be taken while having magnesium as a supplement. It can cause diarrhoea and abdominal cramping

B Complex Vitamins

B complex vitamins are required by the body to carry on physiological functions and maintain the health of the nervous and immune systems. It is found in foods like poultry, eggs, fish, peas, beans, meat etc.

B complex vitamins if wrongly taken can cause nausea

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps the body keep blood sugar levels under control. It is found in fruits like citrus, broccoli, papaya and kale.

Care should be taken while consuming citrus fruits as they can cause kidney stones.

These are some of the common supplements for diabetes. It is always recommended that a doctor should be consulted before making them a part of your diet plan
